| Who’s Been Counterfeiting My Products? |
|
A couple of weeks ago, there was a news story about
how $76 million worth of counterfeit Cisco Systems computer equipment
had been seized as a result of a probe by the FBI and Department of
Homeland Security with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The
Justice Department remarked:
"By intercepting the counterfeit hardware at ports of
entry and dismantling illegal supply chains in the US, the operation
has achieved significant successes in protecting the public from the
risk of network infrastructure failures associated with these
counterfeits.”
The ongoing initiative has resulted in more than 400 seizures of counterfeit Cisco network equipment.
ORBID’s View:
Cisco is one of the best-known brands in the world. A true brand
protection strategy requires the collaboration of many stakeholders to
be successful. Although $76 million seems like a lot of money,
according to The Alliance for Gray Market and Counterfeit Abatement,
“over $40 billion in legitimate IT products move through the gray
market channel each year, resulting in $5 billion in lost profits
annually to IT manufacturers.”
Clearly, counterfeit and gray market activity is a problem that won’t
go away. But these things can be addressed proactively by putting
a program in place to covertly mark and track products. In fact,
the ORBID Secure Product Protection Suite
was created with this type of problem in mind. It provides
manufacturers with a very cost-effective, suite of products and
services for dealing with the types of activities that can devastate
profits, such as counterfeit, grey market, and fraudulent returns.
